Why Heart Health Matters (More Than You Think)

Your heart is part of your autonomic nervous system, meaning it works nonstop—whether you’re resting, stressed, sleeping, or moving.
Picture
A Few Eye-Opening Heart Facts:
  • Your heart beats about 100,000 times per day
  • It pumps roughly 2,000 gallons of blood daily
  • Fewer than 7% of U.S. adults have optimal heart health
  • Heart disease remains the #1 cause of death in the U.S.
This is why prevention and optimization matter, not just avoiding disease.

Conventional Labs vs Functional Labs
Picture
One of the biggest takeaways from this Centered Sunday was understanding the difference between standard lab testing and functional lab interpretation.
  • Conventional labs ask: “Is this number outside a disease range?”
  • Functional labs ask: “Is this optimized for long-term health and longevity?”
Many people are told their labs are “normal” while still experiencing fatigue, inflammation, blood sugar issues, or cardiovascular risk.

Key Heart-Related Labs We Discussed (Simplified)
Cholesterol & Lipids
Cholesterol is essential—it only becomes a problem when inflammation, insulin resistance, or particle imbalance are present.
Important markers include:
  • HDL (protective cholesterol)
  • Triglycerides (strong indicator of insulin resistance)
  • TG:HDL ratio (one of the strongest heart risk predictors)

Inflammation Markers
Chronic inflammation damages blood vessels over time.
Key labs:
  • hs-CRP – measures systemic inflammation
  • Homocysteine – elevated levels increase vascular damage risk

Metabolic Drivers
Blood sugar and insulin play a major role in heart disease.
Important markers:
  • Fasting insulin
  • C-peptide
  • HbA1c (3-month blood sugar average)
Heart disease often begins as a metabolic issue, long before symptoms appear.

Minerals & Oxidative Stress
Mineral imbalances are common and often overlooked.
Key nutrients:
  • Magnesium – supports heart rhythm and relaxation
  • Potassium – critical for blood pressure and muscle function
  • Ferritin (iron storage) – too low or too high can increase risk

Nitric Oxide: The Star of Heart Month
Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas your body produces that:
  • Relaxes blood vessels
  • Improves circulation and oxygen delivery
  • Supports healthy blood pressure
  • Protects the lining of arteries

Why Many People Are Deficient:
  • Aging
  • Chronic stress
  • Poor sleep
  • Insulin resistance
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Overuse of antibacterial mouthwash

Supporting Nitric Oxide NaturallyFood-First Sources:
  • Beets
  • Arugula
  • Spinach
  • Celery
  • Pomegranate

Lifestyle Boosters:
  • Walking
  • Nasal breathing
  • Sunlight
  • Stress reduction
  • Healthy oral microbiome
This is where Cardio Miracle fits in supporting nitric oxide pathways with amino acids and antioxidants that work synergistically with food and movement.

The Emotional Side of Heart Health
Your heart is more than a pump—it has its own intrinsic nervous system and communicates constantly with the brain.
Chronic stress, emotional suppression, and lack of connection increase:
  • Cortisol
  • Inflammation
  • Insulin resistance
  • Cardiovascular risk
Practices like gratitude journaling, mindfulness, and emotional awareness have measurable effects on heart health.

Heart health isn’t just about cholesterol numbers or avoiding disease—it’s about:
  • Metabolic balance
  • Inflammation control
  • Mineral support
  • Emotional well-being
  • Nourishing food
  • Daily lifestyle choices

Centered Sunday is about empowering our community with education, tools, and awareness so you can make informed decisions long before problems arise.

If you missed this month’s gathering, we’ll be building on this foundation all February—stay tuned for upcoming events, resources, and the official launch of Vitality Kitchen.

Join us every first Sunday at 4PM at Centered Wellness in Port St. Lucie FL for our free monthly health meetup. Everyone is welcome.

January 2026 Centered Sunday Recap:

Picture
A Functional Wellness Reset for the New Year

Nervous System Regulation, Detox Support & Immune Resilience in January
January is often framed as a season of radical reinvention--“New Year, New Me.” While that mindset can feel motivating, it frequently ignores the biology of sustainable change. Real transformation doesn’t start with willpower alone; it begins with creating the internal conditions that allow the body to feel safe, regulated, and supported.
At our first Centered Sunday of the New Year, we took a functional wellness approach focusing on nervous system regulation, strategic detox support, immune resilience, and nourishment that works with your physiology, not against it.
A Functional Wellness Approach to January Reset
Rather than pushing the body into extreme routines, restriction, or hustle, functional wellness asks a different question:
What does the body need in order to change naturally?
In January, that foundation includes:
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Gentle detoxification and liver support
  • Immune system resilience
  • Real, whole-food nourishment
When these systems are supported, habits become easier to maintain, energy stabilizes, and change becomes sustainable.

What Was on January’s Table
Food plays a powerful role in nervous system regulation, digestion, and inflammation balance. The homemade offerings at Centered Sunday were intentionally prepared using
simple, whole ingredients designed to support gut health and metabolic stability.
January Menu Highlights
  • Chicken Meatballs with Fresh Marinara & Spaghetti Squash
  • Green Goddess Salad
  • Grain-Free Orange Cranberry Cookies
  • Warm Mulled Cider
These are the types of meals we’ll be offering with the launch of Vitality Kitchen by Centered Wellness: a new way to access simple, nourishing, pre-made meals that support real life, not perfection.

Nervous System 101:
Why Regulation MattersYour nervous system is the master regulator of how your body responds to stress, food, toxins, emotions, and even lifestyle change.

The Two Primary Nervous System LayersCentral Nervous System (CNS)
Comprised of the brain and spinal cord, the CNS governs:
  • Thinking and reasoning
  • Decision-making
  • Conscious movement and awareness
  • Interpreting internal and external stimuli
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
The ANS executes decisions automatically, regulating:
  • Heart rate
  • Digestion
  • Immune signaling
  • Metabolism and stress response
Together, these systems determine whether the body moves into mobilization or recovery.

The Autonomic Nervous System in Action
The ANS has two main branches, both necessary for health:

Sympathetic State (Mobilization)Fight / flight / hustle / grind / chronic stimulation
Parasympathetic State (Restoration)Rest / digest / repair / recovery
The issue isn’t stress—it’s getting stuck in sympathetic dominance, which can contribute to:
  • Blood sugar instability
  • Poor sleep
  • Digestive dysfunction
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Hormone dysregulation
  • Suppressed immune response
Picture
Understanding the Vagus Nerve
The
vagus nerve is a major communication highway between the gut and the brain. Roughly 80% of vagal signals travel from the body to the brain, meaning your brain is primarily listening to your physiology, not commanding it.

Why Vagal Tone Matters
Healthy vagal tone supports:
  • Stress recovery
  • Digestive function
  • Heart rate variability
  • Immune balance
  • Emotional resilience
Low vagal tone often presents as lingering anxiety, poor digestion, disrupted sleep, and chronic tension.
✨ The good news: vagal tone is trainable.
How We Support Nervous System Regulation
Regulation isn’t about eliminating stress—it’s about restoring flexibility between states.

The vagus nerve responds to:
  • Slow, extended exhales
  • Rhythm and gentle resistance
  • Movement
  • Warmth and nourishment
  • Safe social connection
This is why affirmations alone aren’t enough--the body must feel safe first.

Nutrition & Nervous System Support
Nutrients play a critical role in calming the nervous system.

Supportive nutrition includes:
  • Adequate protein
  • Mineral replenishment
  • Warm, cooked foods
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA)
Limiting common nervous system disruptors such as alcohol, excess caffeine, ultra-processed foods, sleep deprivation, and constant stimulation helps restore balance.

Dry January: A Powerful Reset for Metabolic & Brain Health
Dry January invites a pause from alcohol to allow the body to reset and recalibrate.
Alcohol impacts nearly every system in the body:
  • Acts as a mitochondrial toxin
  • Increases oxidative stress
  • Disrupts nervous system regulation
  • Drives inflammation
What Happens When You Stop Drinking
  • Days 1–3: Nervous system recalibration, liver detox increases
  • Days 4–10: Improved energy, sleep normalization, reduced inflammation
  • Weeks 2–4: Improved digestion, blood sugar stability, clearer skin
  • Weeks 4–8: Mitochondrial repair, improved insulin sensitivity
  • Months 2–3: Immune balance, hormone regulation, improved mood
  • Beyond: A calmer baseline and improved decision-making

Immune Resilience in a High-Exposure World
We’re living in an era of constant immune stress due to viral exposure, metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, and nervous system dysregulation.

From a functional medicine perspective, supporting the terrain—rather than fighting illness—creates resilience.
Key foundations include:
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Restorative sleep
  • Stable blood sugar
  • Gentle movement and circulation
  • Reducing toxic load and overstimulation

Supporting the Process with Intention
Change is easier when biology is supported.

At Centered Wellness, we offer targeted functional protocols to support detoxification, immune balance, and nervous system resilience—paired with education and coaching to help those changes stick.

Join Us at Centered Sundays
Centered Sundays are our free monthly community wellness gatherings held on the first Sunday of every month. Each gathering focuses on education, nourishment, and connection—designed to help you reset, learn, and feel supported.

✨ Sustainable change doesn’t come from forcing your body—it comes from understanding it.

Why Vitamin D and Nitric Oxide Matter — And How Cardio Miracle Can Help

Picture
The Power of Vitamin D and Nitric Oxide:
A Pathway to Brain and Heart Health

In today’s health landscape, two nutrients stand out as essential allies for long-term vitality: vitamin D and nitric oxide (NO). These key compounds work together to support cardiovascular function, brain health, immunity, and overall energy. Recent research shows how vital vitamin D truly is — and why a product like Cardio Miracle can make such a powerful difference.
Vitamin D Deficiency and the Risk of Early-Onset DementiaA recent article published by The Epoch Times, “Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Higher Risk of Early-Onset Dementia”, highlights new evidence connecting low vitamin D levels to cognitive decline and dementia in adults younger than 65.

According to the findings:
  • Nearly one-third of adults are vitamin D deficient.
  • Low levels of this crucial nutrient may accelerate cognitive deterioration and memory loss.
  • Researchers now list vitamin D deficiency among 15 modifiable lifestyle factors that contribute to early-onset dementia risk.

Vitamin D is not just for bones — it’s essential for brain health, mood regulation, immune resilience, and cellular repair. The article underscores how this simple nutrient can have far-reaching effects on quality of life and longevity.

Nitric Oxide: The Body’s Natural Circulation SupportWhile vitamin D supports the body on a cellular and hormonal level, nitric oxide ensures that oxygen and nutrients actually reach the tissues that need them. Often called the “miracle molecule,” nitric oxide helps relax and expand blood vessels, improving circulation and nutrient delivery throughout the body.
When nitric oxide levels decline — which happens naturally with age, stress, or inactivity — the body experiences sluggish blood flow, fatigue, and increased inflammation. This can interfere with the transport and utilization of nutrients like vitamin D, even if intake is adequate.

By optimizing nitric oxide, you help your body:
  • Improve vascular health and blood flow
  • Support cognitive clarity and memory
  • Boost energy, exercise performance, and recovery
  • Enhance nutrient absorption and immune defense

The Synergy of Vitamin D and Nitric Oxide
When vitamin D and nitric oxide work together, the results are extraordinary. Vitamin D supports the immune and endocrine systems, while nitric oxide keeps your circulatory system open and efficient — allowing nutrients and oxygen to travel freely.

Together, they:
  • Promote heart and brain health
  • Reduce oxidative stress and inflammation
  • Support mental clarity and mood stability
  • Help regulate blood pressure and metabolic balance

Why Cardio Miracle Stands Out
Cardio Miracle is one of the most comprehensive nitric oxide supplements available today. It not only boosts nitric oxide production naturally but also delivers a powerful dose of vitamin D3 — around 40 µg (1600 IU) per serving, which is approximately 200% of the daily recommended value.
Each serving contains over 50 nutrient-dense, plant-based ingredients including L-arginine, L-citrulline, beetroot extract, vitamin C, vitamin K2, and antioxidant-rich superfoods. This unique combination supports both NO production and nutrient delivery, creating a full-spectrum approach to cardiovascular and cognitive health.
Key benefits of Cardio Miracle include:
  • Supports brain and heart function through enhanced circulation
  • Delivers a potent dose of vitamin D3 for immune and neurological support
  • Improves nitric oxide bioavailability, promoting better oxygenation
  • Boosts energy and recovery for active lifestyles
  • Strengthens overall wellness at the cellular level

How to Incorporate Cardio Miracle
For best results:
  • Take one to two servings daily, ideally morning and mid-afternoon, mixed with water or juice.
  • Combine with a nutrient-rich diet, movement, and moderate sun exposure for natural vitamin D synthesis.
  • Monitor your vitamin D status periodically with a simple blood test.
  • Stay hydrated and support your body’s detox pathways through regular exercise and rest.
The Takeaway
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to serious long-term effects on brain function — including early-onset dementia — but there’s a clear path to prevention. By supporting both vitamin D intake and nitric oxide production, you can create an internal environment that promotes resilience, cognitive clarity, and heart health.
Cardio Miracle brings these two powerhouse systems together in one formula — making it a smart, science-backed addition to any wellness routine.

Centered Sunday Wellness Meetup Recap

September 2025
September is packed with opportunities to nourish your body and soul. 🌟 From National Fruits & Veggies Month and National Yoga Month to awareness campaigns like Hunger Action Month, National Cholesterol Education Month, and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, this is a time to focus on health, wellness, and giving back. At Centered Wellness & Yoga, we’re celebrating with community events, donation drives, and special classes that support both personal growth and collective healing. Plus, don’t miss our Yoga Teacher Training—recognized as the best in the Treasure Coast—where you’ll deepen your practice, expand your knowledge, and step confidently into teaching. Dive in to learn how eating more plants, moving your body through yoga, and engaging in mindful practices can improve longevity, lower disease risk, and create positive change in our community.
🥦 National Fruits & Veggies Month
History of this observance day
  • Started in 2019 as a way to celebrate produce and make it a bigger part of everyday life.
  • Grew out of the old “5 A Day” campaign (1991) by the National Cancer Institute + Produce for Better Health Foundation.

The FDA 5 A Day for Better Health Campaign
  • Guideline: Eat 5 servings/day (2 cups fruit + 3 cups vegetables)
  • Launched in 1991 by the National Cancer Institute and the Produce for Better Health Foundation
  • Research showed 5 servings of fruits and vegetables lowered cancer and chronic disease risk
  • 5 A Day Prevents deficiency, but does not necessarily promote optimal wellness.
  • Based on population-level data / lowest common denominator of what reduces disease risk

🥬 Functional Medicine Model: 7-9 Servings
  • Higher veggie intake = higher soluble + insoluble fiber
  • More Nutrients → more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients
  • More Fiber → digestion, blood sugar balance, cholesterol, microbiome
  • These compounds fight oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and support detox pathway
  • Benefits: better digestion, balanced blood sugar, improved cholesterol, stronger microbiome
  • Colors matter:
    • Red → heart & prostate
    • Orange/Yellow → eyes, skin, immunity
    • Green → detox, bone, blood
    • Purple/Blue → brain, memory
    • White → anti-inflammatory, immune

Many people are undernourished even if they’re not calorie deficient

5 servings = enough to not get sick
7–9 servings = enough to feel well, age well, and protect your body long-term

A meta-analysis (Aune et al., Int J Epidemiol, 2017) found that while 5 servings lowered risk, 7-9 servings/day gave the strongest protection against premature death, heart disease, and cancer.

🥗 📦 Hunger Action Month
Hunger Action Month was established in 2008 by Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S. Every September, communities across the country come together to raise awareness about food insecurity and to take action through volunteering, donating, and advocacy.

🥕 Food for Thought: Clean Eating as a Privilege
While we often talk about food in terms of clean eating, organic produce, and nutrient density, the reality is that millions of people don’t have consistent access to any food, let alone the kind that promotes wellness.
  • Clean eating is a luxury that many people don’t have access to
  • Those who are food-insecure often rely on shelf-stable, highly processed foods that don’t nourish long-term health

 📊 Hunger Awareness Facts
  • Food insecurity affects 44 million Americans, including 13 million children
  • Nearly 1 in 4 military families experiences food insecurity
  • Veterans and seniors are disproportionately impacted, often forced to choose between food, housing, or healthcare
  • Hunger is not about lack of food production - it’s about access and equity
  • Access is not equal: many families rely on ultra-processed, inexpensive foods that lack nutrients, fueling cycles of chronic disease
  • People facing food insecurity are more likely to experience diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, largely because low-cost, high-calorie foods are often the only option

🌟 What Can We Do? Giving Back Through Yoga
We are deeply grateful for our own abundance, and this month, we’re also moving from awareness into action.  Michelle, one of our beloved teachers and our massage manager, is working to do volunteer work with a local organization

About Angels of HopeA local “hands on” Grassroots 501 c 3 all volunteer organization that supports local homeless children, veterans, elderly and disabled.  These are people living on the streets and in camps located in the woods and fields and other areas not meant for human habitation all along Florida’s space and Treasure coast.
  • Donation-based beachside yoga class in September (date TBA) / 100% of proceeds directly to support this cause.
  • Food and essential supply drive at the studio- all of Sept.
  • All donations will go directly to Angels of Hope

🩺 National Cholesterol Education Month
National Cholesterol Education Month was created by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute back in 1985 to raise awareness about high cholesterol and heart disease. Almost 40 years later, it’s still one of the most recognized health observances each September.

What Is Cholesterol? Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that your body makes and uses in every cell. It’s not a toxin or something “bad” - it’s a natural building block that keeps your body running. Because it doesn’t dissolve in water, your body packages it into carriers called lipoproteins (that’s where HDL and LDL come in).

Why Cholesterol MattersMost people think of cholesterol as “bad,” but the truth is: cholesterol is essential for life.
  • Cell membranes: gives every cell strength and flexibility
  • Hormones: raw material for estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, and vitamin D
  • Nerve insulation: helps messages travel smoothly in your nervous system
  • Brain health: 25% of all cholesterol is in your brain; low cholesterol is linked to dementia risk

Where Cholesterol Comes From
  • Only 20–25% comes from diet (eggs, meat, dairy, seafood)
  • The majority (75–80%) is made by your own body - mainly the liver, but also intestines, adrenal glands, and reproductive organs
  • Self-regulating system: eat more cholesterol and the liver makes less; eat less and the liver makes more

Dietary Cholesterol: Myths vs. TruthFor decades, cholesterol-rich foods were blamed. But modern evidence tells a different story:
  • For most people, dietary cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol
  • Eggs actually raise HDL (“good” cholesterol) and shift LDL into larger, less harmful particles
  • Only about 20–30% of people are “hyper-responders” whose cholesterol rises more noticeably with diet

💊 Conventional Treatment for High Cholesterol
Statins are prescription drugs that lower cholesterol by blocking an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase. That enzyme is basically the factory switch your body uses to make cholesterol.

  • Primary goal: lower LDL (“bad cholesterol”)
  • Secondary effects: can also reduce inflammation in blood vessels, helping prevent plaque buildup

🚦 Why Statins Are Controversial
Statins can absolutely save lives in certain high-risk groups. But they’re not without drawbacks, and it’s important to understand the trade-offs before starting one.

⚠️ Common Side Effects (10–20% of patients)
  • Muscle pain and weakness (sometimes severe)
  • Fatigue and lower exercise tolerance
  • Brain fog or memory issues
  • Digestive upset (nausea, constipation, diarrhea)

⚠️ Long-Term Risks
  • Increased risk of Type 2 diabetes (especially with long-term use)
  • Liver enzyme elevations (rare but monitored)
  • Possible higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke in some groups

⚠️ Nutrient Depletion
  • Statins block the same pathway that makes cholesterol, but it also reduces other critical compounds.
    • CoQ10: vital for mitochondrial energy production → deficiency linked to fatigue, muscle pain, and heart function decline
    • Vitamin D: may lower active vitamin D levels
    • Selenium & others: minor impacts on antioxidant status

⚠️ Bigger Picture Questions
  • Despite widespread use, heart disease remains the #1 cause of death in the U.S.
  • Statins focus on lowering cholesterol numbers, but don’t address root causes like inflammation, blood sugar imbalance, poor diet, or chronic stress
  • Many people are prescribed statins based on moderate risk - not dangerously high cholesterol

📊 How Doctors Decide on Statins
Before 2013 (old guidelines): Focused on cholesterol numbers
  • LDL ≥190 mg/dL or known heart disease → statin candidate
  • Moderate cholesterol without other risks → usually no medication
  • Analogy:  We only give medicine if the thermometer shows a really high fever.

After 2013 (new guidelines): Shift to a 10-year risk score (Pooled Cohort Equations)
  • Even with moderate LDL, if your risk ≥7.5%, you’re likely prescribed a statin
  • Expanded statin prescriptions to millions more
  • Analogy:  We give medicine if your thermometer plus your age, family history, and lifestyle predict you might get a fever later.
📈 How Many More People Are on Statins?
  • 2013 guideline changes made 12.8 million more adults (ages 40–75) eligible
  • Statin use jumped from 37 million (2012–13) to 92 million (2018–19) - a 149% increase
  • That’s more than a threefold rise since 2008–09

🪦 Real-World Impact: Heart Disease Deaths
  • 2013: ~170 deaths per 100,000 (age-adjusted)
  • 2023: ~203 deaths per 100,000 (~680,981 deaths in the U.S.)

👉 Even with the rise in statin use, more Americans are dying from heart disease now than a decade ago.

🩸 Beyond Standard Cholesterol Testing
Most doctors run a basic cholesterol panel (HDL, LDL, triglycerides). But here’s the problem: not all LDL cholesterol is the same. Some particles are big and fluffy (less harmful), and some are small and sticky (more dangerous). The standard test doesn’t tell you the difference.

  • 🧪 NMR LipoProfile
    • Shows particle number and size (big vs small LDL)
    • The regular test says “There’s cargo on the highway.” NMR says “Here’s how many trucks are carrying it, and whether they’re semis or beat-up clunkers.”
  • 🧪ApoB (Apolipoprotein B)
    • LDL = how much cholesterol you have.
    • ApoB = how many trucks are actually on the road.
    • More trucks = more chances for accidents (blockages).
    • This number can sneak up, especially during life changes like menopause.
  • 🧪Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]
    • This is a cholesterol particle that’s almost entirely genetic.
    • You only need to test it once in your life, but it’s important because if it’s high, it can explain why arteries clog even when other numbers look okay.
    • Most doctors don’t order it — but it can be a missing piece of the puzzle.
🌟 Why This Matters Before Starting a Statin
Too often, patients are put on statins just because of one number (total cholesterol) or because they have Type 2 diabetes. But cholesterol is far more nuanced. Seeing a lipidologist (cholesterol specialist) can provide clarity and prevent unnecessary medication.

  • Prescribing based on incomplete tests risks unnecessary medication
  • Advanced testing gives a clearer picture of real risk
  • Lets you and your provider make decisions from clarity, not guesswork

🌿 What You Can Control

If genetics aren’t the main issue, the biggest drivers of cholesterol problems are:
  • Inflammation
  • High blood sugar → sticky like syrup on artery walls
  • High insulin → shuts off nitric oxide, preventing arteries from relaxing
  • Stress and poor sleep → worsen cholesterol balance

🥗 Drug-Free Ways to Support Healthy Cholesterol
Food as Medicine
  • Cut sugar/refined carbs → lowers triglycerides 20–50%
  • Add soluble fiber (beans, flax, chia, oats) → lowers LDL 5–10%
  • Healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, omega-3 fish) → shift LDL into safer particles; omega-3s cut triglycerides 25–30%

Lifestyle Choices
  • Exercise: raises HDL up to 10%, lowers triglycerides 20–30%
  • Stress reduction: yoga, meditation, breathwork lower inflammation
  • Sleep: 7–9 hours supports healthy cholesterol metabolism

Targeted Supplements
  • CoQ10: supports energy + heart health (especially for statin users)
  • Omega-3s: proven triglyceride-lowering effect
  • Berberine: supports LDL and blood sugar
  • Niacin: raises HDL (must be monitored)
  • Red Yeast Rice: natural statin-like effect (requires supervision)

🎗️ Childhood Cancer (National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month)
National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month was first proclaimed by President George H. W. Bush in 1990. The gold ribbon is its symbol - chosen because children are as precious as gold.

  • Only 4% of national cancer funds go toward childhood cancers - despite it being the leading cause of death by disease for children in the U.S.
  • Kids face higher risks of long-term side effects from chemo and radiation because their bodies are still developing.
  • The Hope: Advances in immunotherapy and integrative care approaches are showing promise in safer, more effective treatments.
  • How We Can Help: Beyond research dollars, community efforts like fundraisers, bracelet sales, and volunteering provide families with comfort and resources during the hardest fight of their lives.

💜 Maddie’s Fight Foundation (MFF)
  • Local organization that raises awareness and funds for children battling cancer.
  • 100% volunteer operated
  • To Date- helped over 700 families between financial awards, gifts and care packages
  • Allied with several pediatric cancer teams across the country, including Joe DiMaggio and Jack Nicklaus Children’s Hospitals, Nemours, The Cleveland Clinic and P.O.S.T. (Pediatric Oncology Support Team, Inc.)
  • Upcoming Gala & Casino Night: Next Saturday! Tickets are still available

Mango Habanero Salsa

Picture
Mango Habanero Salsa: A Spicy, Blood Sugar-Friendly Recipe You’ll Love 🌶️🥭

Looking for a salsa that’s sweet, spicy, and still supports your health goals? Say hello to our Mango Habanero Salsa — a fiery little number that’s 100% detox-approved and surprisingly low on the glycemic index. Whether you’re participating in our 5-Month Guided Detox & Metabolic Reset Program at Centered Wellness or just trying to clean up your snacking game, this recipe checks all the boxes: bold flavor, clean ingredients, and zero guilt.

What makes this salsa so special (besides the perfect heat-to-sweet ratio) is that it’s compliant for those managing blood sugar, including individuals with diabetes. Mangos, when used in moderation and paired with spicy habanero, lime juice, and fresh herbs, offer a nutrient-rich, low-fat option that doesn’t spike glucose levels the way sugary salsas or store-bought condiments can. This recipe skips added sugars and artificial preservatives — just fresh, whole ingredients that taste amazing and support your body’s natural detox pathways.

Want to level it up? Pair it with Siete Grain-Free Tortilla Chips — made with cassava flour, totally free of seed oils, and non-GMO corn-free. These chips are crunchy, satisfying, and a fan favorite in our detox community. It’s proof that eating clean doesn’t mean giving up fun food — it just means getting creative with better ingredients.

Ready to taste for yourself?
RECIPE:
  • 2-3 habanero peppers (depending on spice level you desire)
  • ▢1 mango
  • ▢½ white onion
  • ▢1 clove garlic
  • ▢3 tablespoon maple syrup or coconut sugar
  • ▢3 tablespoon white vinegar
  • ▢2 tablespoon lime juice
  • ▢½ teaspoon salt

Instructions
  • Peel and dice mango, cut and deseed habanero peppers (if you want it hot, keep the seeds and membranes).
  • Add habanero peppers, mango, roughly chopped onion and garlic in a saucepan with 1-2 tablespoon of water. If you are using coconut sugar instead of maple syrup, add it, too.
  • Bring to a boil and cook until onions are translucent, for about 5 minutes.
  • Add maple syrup (if you didn't use coconut sugar), white vinegar, lime juice and salt and stir.
  • Transfer to a air tight jar and place in the fridge over night or for a few hours until cooled.
ENJOY!

Centered Sunday July 2025 Recap

Picture
July is National Healthy Vision Month!

Vision isn’t just what we see with our eyes- it’s how clearly we view our life, our path, and our purpose.
  • What are you seeing clearly right now- in your life, body, or spirit?
  • It’s the midpoint of the year! Reflect on January goals
  • What do you now see differently than you did in January?”
  • What still feels aligned? What do you want to call in now?

🧬 Eye Health & Vision Through a Functional LensEye Health Reflects Systemic WellnessHOLISTIC does not mean:
  • Healthy (e.g., “a holistic snack”)
  • Natural (e.g., “a holistic shampoo”)
  • Organic or “non-toxic”
  • Trendy wellness branding
These can be part of a holistic approach, but using the word that way waters down its true meaning.
Holistic refers to a whole-person approach. It's about looking at the interconnectedness of body, mind, emotions, spirit, environment, and lifestyle- not just physical health.

  • It asks why symptoms occur, not just how to relieve them.
  • It includes emotional well-being, relationships, spirituality, sleep, and purpose.
  • It's common in functional medicine, Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, and even trauma-informed care.
Considering the WHOLE body and how systems interconnect…vision issues are often a signal of deeper imbalances.
Vision is tied to:
  • Mitochondrial health
  • Blood sugar balance
  • Oxidative stress & detox capacity

👀 What Your Eye Symptoms Are Trying to Tell You
Yellow sclera - Liver/gallbladder stress
Puffy lids - Lymph congestion, toxins
Dark circles - Adrenal fatigue, dehydration
Dry/itchy eyes - Omega-3 deficiency, inflammation
Blurred vision - Blood sugar imbalance, screen overload
Red, irritated whites - Environmental toxins, histamine overload
Let’s dig a little deeper…

👁️ Whole-Body Clues from the Windows to the SouL
LiverThe liver filters toxins, excess hormones (like estrogen), and inflammatory compounds like histamine. When sluggish or overburdened, waste builds up and can present as yellowing of the sclera (bilirubin backup), itchy or irritated eyes (histamine), and even mood-related issues like irritability or anger -  emotions tied to liver imbalance in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Eye tissues are also highly sensitive to oxidative stress, which increases when liver detox pathways are compromised.

GutWhen your gut lining is ‘leaky,’ it lets microscopic toxins from bad bacteria sneak into your bloodstream. These toxins are called LPS (Lipopolysaccharides), and they fire up inflammation -  which can show up as dry or red eyes, brain fog, or even joint pain.  Poor gut health also affects nutrient absorption -  including vitamin A, zinc, and B vitamins -  all essential for ocular function. Gut imbalance often leads to histamine intolerance, which can worsen seasonal or environmental eye symptoms.

KidneysThe kidneys regulate fluid retention and waste excretion through urine. When underperforming, excess fluid can accumulate in tissues, especially around the delicate under-eye area, leading to puffiness or swelling. Poor filtration also means more metabolic waste circulating in the blood, which can contribute to dark circles, dull sclera, or lymphatic stagnation.

Blood SugarGlucose spikes and crashes strain the tiny capillaries in the eyes, often leading to blurred vision, floaters, and eye fatigue. When blood sugar remains high over time, it generates oxidative stress and triggers a process called glycation, where sugar binds to proteins and fats in the body. This forms harmful compounds called AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products) -  think of them as “sugar rust” that builds up on delicate tissues. AGEs stiffen blood vessels, damage the retina, and block the delivery of nutrients to eye cells. Over time, this contributes to diabetic retinopathy and age-related vision decline. Stable blood sugar helps prevent this process, protecting your eyes and preserving vibrant, sharp vision.

🌿 Seasonal Eye Care -  Summer Wellness Focus

Allergy Season- Eyes are itchy/watery due to histamine overload → often connected to gut dysbiosis
  • Quercetin, nettle tea, gut/liver support
  • Saline rinses + cold compress
  • Limit histamine-rich foods (vinegar, leftovers)

These foods either contain high levels of histamine
or trigger its release in the body:
  • Aged cheeses (parmesan, blue cheese, gouda), Yogurt, kefir, Sauerkraut, kimchi, Vinegar + vinegar-based condiments (mustard, ketchup, pickles), Soy sauce (including tamari), Miso, tempeh
  • Smoked, canned, or dried fish (tuna, sardines, anchovies), Leftover meats/fish that sit in the fridge (histamine builds over time), Processed meats (salami, pepperoni, bacon), Shellfish (shrimp, crab, mussels)
  • Tomatoes, Spinach, Eggplant, Avocados, Strawberries, Citrus fruits (lemons, limes, oranges, Bananas
  • Alcohol, Wine (especially red wine and champaign), Beer, Black tea, green tea, matcha, Coffee, Chocolate and cocoa
  • Artificial colorings + preservatives

Note- some of these foods are wonderful, healthy foods, but during allergy season they can aggravate an already sensitive system.

Balance your diet with smart, low-histamine options like:
  • Carrots, Coconut water, Cruciferous veggies, Pumpkin, Fresh watermelon (ok for most)

Chlorine & Pool Water-
Can cause burning, dryness, and blurred vision
  • Rinse eyes post-swim
  • Apply coconut oil around eyes before
  • Use goggles + up omega-3s

Sunlight & UV Protection- UV accelerates eye aging
  • Wear UV sunglasses (wraparound)
  • Eat lutein + zeaxanthin-rich foods
Stay hydrated + support collagen (vitamin C/E)

⚕️ Why Eye Exams Matter
A comprehensive eye exam doesn’t just assess vision -  it can reveal early signs of:
  • High blood pressure (tiny blood vessel changes)
  • Diabetes (bleeding or swelling in the retina)
  • High cholesterol (plaque deposits around the cornea)
  • Autoimmune diseases (dry eye, inflammation)
  • Neurological disorders (nerve damage, optic changes)

👁️ Alternative Eye Health Options
The eyes do far more than help us see the world -  they can reflect what’s happening inside our bodies. Two time-tested observational practices, iridology and sclerology, use the eyes as a diagnostic map to spot imbalances long before symptoms become disease.

🌈 Iridology – The Iris as Your Blueprint
Iridology studies the iris, the colored portion of your eye. Practitioners examine pigment patterns, fiber structure, and rings to identify constitutional strengths and weaknesses, showing genetic tendencies such as:
  • Organ resiliency or sluggishness
  • Predisposition to inflammation
  • Emotional or nervous system imprints

Iridology doesn’t diagnose disease, but it does offer a functional snapshot of inherited patterns.

🧿 Sclerology – The Whites Reveal the Now
Sclerology focuses on what’s happening right now. It examines the sclera, or whites of the eyes- reading red lines, cloudiness, color changes, and markings as indicators of active stress in specific organs or systems.

A skilled sclerologist might see:
  • Yellowish tones (suggesting liver/gallbladder stress)
  • Red spider lines (pointing to inflammation or toxic load)
  • Darkness under the eye (linked to kidney/adrenal fatigue)

🧠 Functional Wisdom Meets Visual Intelligence
Both iridology and sclerology can offer non-invasive insight into your health journey. While they don’t replace lab testing, they often complement it.  These practices are reminders that your body is always communicating -  even through your eyes. When paired with functional medicine, they offer a beautiful bridge between intuition and science, helping you “see” imbalance early and support healing before it’s urgent.

🌍 Eyewear Donation Drive

Several organizations clean up and repurpose donated prescription and non prescription glasses, sunglasses and readers for those in need.
  • Lions Clubs International:  lionsclubs.org/recycle-eyeglasses
  • OneSight / EssilorLuxottica:  onesight.org

For the month of July, we will have a drop box in the studio where you can leave donation glasses.  We will bring them to a drop off spot on  behalf of our community here at Centered Wellness and Yoga
