Centered Sunday Recap - June 2026

Centered Sunday Recap: Summer Brain & Body Balance
At this month's Centered Sunday gathering, our community came together for an inspiring conversation about brain health, nutrition, blood sugar balance, healthy fats, movement, sunlight, and practical ways to support long-term wellness. We explored how the everyday choices we make influence not only our energy and mood, but also our brain function, heart health, and longevity.

A Mid-Year Wellness Check-In
As we move through the middle of the year, we took time to reflect on where we are and where we want to be. One powerful question guided our discussion:
If your future self could send you a message six months from now, what habit would they thank you for starting today?
Small daily choices often create the biggest long-term changes. Whether it's improving sleep, moving more, eating nourishing foods, or spending more time outdoors, consistent habits build the foundation for lasting health.
Building a Brain That Lasts
June is Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to discuss one of the most important concepts in modern neuroscience: neuroplasticity.
For years, many people believed that cognitive decline was simply an inevitable part of aging. Today's research tells a different story. The brain is constantly adapting, forming new connections, strengthening pathways, and responding to our daily experiences. Every meal, conversation, workout, stress response, and night's sleep sends signals that help shape our brain.

What Supports Brain Health?
We discussed four basic needs of a healthy brain:
  • Quality nutrition
  • Healthy blood flow
  • Mental stimulation
  • Recovery and sleep
The brain may only account for about 2% of body weight, but it uses approximately 20% of the body's energy. That means what we eat, how we move, and how we recover have a profound impact on cognitive function.

Factors That Can Negatively Impact Brain Health
While age is often blamed for cognitive decline, several lifestyle factors play a significant role:
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Blood sugar dysregulation
  • Poor sleep
  • Social isolation
  • Sedentary lifestyles
The encouraging news is that many of these factors are within our control. Through movement, connection, proper nutrition, stress management, and quality sleep, we can actively support brain health throughout life.

Why Movement Matters
One topic that resonated strongly with attendees was the importance of circulation.
The brain relies on a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients delivered through healthy blood flow. Activities such as:
  • Walking
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Strength training
  • Dancing
all help increase circulation to the brain and support long-term cognitive function.
We also discussed nitric oxide, a compound that helps blood vessels relax and expand, supporting healthy circulation throughout the body. Foods like leafy greens, spinach, arugula, and beets can help support this important pathway.

The Power of Social Connection
One of the strongest forms of brain stimulation isn't found in a supplement bottle. It's found in human connection.
Meaningful conversations require memory, language, emotional processing, and attention. Research continues to show that loneliness and social isolation can negatively impact both mental and physical health.
This is one reason community-centered wellness gatherings like Centered Sunday are so valuable. Connection itself is a form of health care.
Sleep: The Ultimate Recovery Tool
Perhaps the most important brain-supporting habit we discussed was sleep.
During sleep, the brain:
  • Organizes memories
  • Stores learning
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Repairs and restores tissues
Attendees were fascinated to learn about the brain's "cleanup crew," known as the glymphatic system, which becomes highly active during sleep and helps remove waste products from the brain.
Understanding Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fats
A major focus of this month's discussion was healthy fats and their role in brain function.
The brain is composed largely of fat and relies heavily on omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, for structure and function. These fats support:
  • Brain health
  • Vision
  • Heart health
  • Healthy blood vessels
  • Cell membrane function
  • Balanced inflammatory responses
Sources of omega-3s include:
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Anchovies
  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seeds
  • Walnuts
We also discussed omega-6 fatty acids. Contrary to popular belief, omega-6 fats are not inherently harmful. They play important roles in immune function, growth, healing, and inflammation. The challenge arises when modern diets become disproportionately high in omega-6-rich processed foods and seed oils while lacking sufficient omega-3 intake.
The Importance of Blood Sugar Stability
One of the most practical takeaways from the day was understanding blood sugar variability.
Many people focus on whether their blood sugar is "high" or "low," but what may matter just as much is how dramatically it fluctuates throughout the day.
Large swings in blood sugar can contribute to:
  • Energy crashes
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood swings
  • Increased inflammation
  • Sugar cravings
Instead of aiming for perfection, we discussed strategies that promote greater stability:
  • Prioritize protein at meals
  • Include healthy fats
  • Eat fiber-rich foods
  • Choose minimally processed options
  • Move after meals
  • Strength train regularly
  • Prioritize sleep
  • Reduce chronic stress
These simple habits help create steadier energy and support overall brain function.
Sunlight: Nature's Daily Reset Button
We wrapped up our discussion with one of the simplest and most overlooked wellness tools available: sunlight.
Morning sunlight helps regulate the body's circadian rhythm, supporting:
  • Better sleep
  • Balanced energy
  • Healthy blood sugar regulation
  • Mood and motivation
  • Brain health
Getting outside shortly after waking helps signal the body's internal clock and can improve sleep quality later that evening.
We also explored the benefits of red and near-infrared light in the evening, which may support relaxation, recovery, and the body's natural rest-and-repair processes.
The biggest takeaway from this month's Centered Sunday wasn't perfection. It was awareness.
Brain health, energy, mood, metabolism, and longevity aren't determined by one meal, one workout, or one night's sleep. They're shaped by the choices we make consistently over time.
Every healthy meal, every walk, every yoga class, every meaningful conversation, every good night's sleep is a vote for the future version of yourself.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us for another incredible Centered Sunday. If you missed this month's gathering, we hope this recap provides a few practical insights you can begin implementing right away.
We can't wait to see you at next month's event.
